BEFORE: This former 17th century mule stall situated in the hills above Levanto in Liguria was filled with old Victorian antiques from the former owners and had a serious humidity problem. First, the roof was re-done and the exterior walls were re-stuccoed. As the building sits directly on an inclining hill, the earth underneath it and behind it had to be dug out in order to create the necessary isolation to prevent further rising damp. |

AFTER: Rozanne chose local Carrara marble for the flooring and ran the traditional Ligurian “rhombo” pattern through the entire house. Pietra Santa marble was used on the walls in the bathrooms, and a contemporary black kitchen completed the scheme.
The Victorian furniture was too dark and heavy for a Mediterranean house, so many pieces were removed. However, certain ones remain. Inspired by the dazzling colours of a Matisse painting, Rozanne re-upholstered the Empire sofa in imperial blue. Emerald green and other vibrant colours of the landscape followed to give the house new verve and vigour. |
